Oh dear, yet another thing to add to the rag bag of middle aged health issues. OH has had a strange lump on the side of one of his fingers for some years now. He has spoken with his GP over the years about it and it has always been put down to being a Ganglion (spelling). he was becoming more concerned about it and they ran some bloods and it is actually Gout - we were so naive and sort of assumed you could only get it in the foot (too much telly !) I think they tested some kind of acid and his was over 500 and normal should be about 250 - more medication for life from the sounds of it. xxxx

No huge alcohol consumption, maybe a bottle of wine between us a week. Some diet issues but not major as he had to bring his cholesterol down for other reasons and did that successfully last year. xxxx

Thanks for you comment sweetpea , we were really surprised it was gout as touch wood he has no pain with it, and we both associate gout with pain. His worry was this hump on the side of his finger was getting so big it was becoming awkward for him. Also as well as the medication for the gout itself for the first few weeks he has to take anti-inflammatory's as there is a chance that it could transfer to other parts of the body, but apparently taking the anti inflams prevents that from happening. We are just going along with the GP as we are clueless on this.
We thought it was a ganglion for the last four years.

Thanks for all the good wishes on this, have managed to prise a bit more information out of him ( why is it always so hard to get the full story ).
I was confused as to always having associated it with pain and there isnt any so pressed for more info, he is now explaining it as being 'a gout related condition' due to high uric acid. So I'm even more confused.
He seems confident about diagnosis & treatment as GP spent a good 20 mins with him expaining it and showing him stuff on t'intenet.
GP even photographed it, apparently it's a bit of a hobby of his. lol. Perhaps DH will be in The Lancet, well his finger lump anyway...
