Hi Ladies, Thought i would ask this here to see what you would do. After my op 3 and a half years ago i have struggled to go to the bathroom. I have been dependant on prescribed lacatives and over the counter ones also. Today while at gp i mentioned to him i was concerned about length of time on them and he said i have nothing to worry about as its just my bowels arent working anymore and will always need help. Last time i stopped them and went 15 days and ended up in hospital with it so stuck to them since. Whats your thoughts on this ladies please. Thanks Lainey xx I do sympathise Lainey. I also ended up in hospital with this many years ago. All I was taking was one tablet a day, but the cumulative effect of it by the end of two years was that I developed an impacted bowel, which is probably one of the most painful conditions I have ever had. xxxx

I agree, i also don't think three years on laxatives is healthy, it is very difficult though, could you ask for a referral to some kind of nutritionalist as maybe they could work with you to find an eating plan that means your bowels work on their own.
Sometimes people have unique needs and need specialist advice tailored individually for them & all the generic stuff that you read on the net and in journals like upping your fruit and veg and fibre really dosen't cut it.
I get cross when people suggest all sorts of medical things cang be resolved by a few dietary changes, often it is much more complex than that.
Sometimes you get patronising comments when you say you are having a bad menopause & they insist you can solve by taking changing a few foodstuffs or taking flippin actimel.
What right have they got to assume I have a poor diet anyway?
Provided you have a relatively healthy diet with sufficient nutrients, IMHO very little can be achived by cutting out one food & subsituting it with whatever the current 'miracle food' is.
These sorts of things are normally the domain of various 'Quack' doctors, who you then find out have their own blueberry farm or carrot juice making business. Cynical Moi ? You bet.

I think that sounds like a sensible plan Lainey. I hate medical appointments so know how you will feel especially withh all you have been through, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go, and three years is a long time, also it can then sometimes take a while to get to the bottom of what is going on.

Maybe it's me, but a comment like your "bowels arent working anymore" just isn't good enough. Why aren't they working anymore. Your bowels are meant to do what they are meant to do, and if they aren't, then something isn't right, and you need to see someone who is prepared to work out what the problem is.
Provided you are eating a good diet, with lots of fibre and especially veggies, your bowels should just automatically do what they have to do, and if they aren't you need to know why. You certainly don't want to be like my mother who is constantly taking laxatives and powders to keep hers moving.
I've always been good in that department. The only time I have problems is if I haven't been eating right (not having my daily veggies), or if I eat a lot of nuts. They really stop me up...lol...

I hope by now you've gone back to bed and you're sleeping soundly. Yep definitely think you need a new GP.
