Thanks for the information, Candy. The mental symptoms have been the worst for me during the peri phase - the last 11 years! Mood swings/weepiness/forgetfulness as well as feeling I was losing my mind and being unable to think straight. It all went into abeyance while I was on HRT, came back again when I stopped, but now, after 5 years of no HRT I feel more like myself and can THINK again. That tells me that the problem may lie not so much with the reduction in oestrogen, but in the fluctuating levels. Now I'm at a stage where it seems to be settling down my brain seems to be working properly again (most of the time). I got very stressed & weepy about 3 weeks ago, for no apparent reason, and then had a period - first one for 15 weeks, which is the longest gap I've had. Since then, fine again. I'd be interested to know if anyone else who is not taking HRT has the same experience.

If it was something not quite right it would be all the time?? Stumpy xx That's how I always rationalise anything weird, health wise, but with HRT you are supplementing hormones that you "should" have naturally. If you've been experiencing unpleasant meno symptoms for some time before going on HRT I guess it will take a while for your hormone levels to even out. This was my experience, certainly. I'd taken progesterone alone for many years to sort out an erratic cycle and deal with terrible PMS. It was only when this seemed to stop working in my early 40s that I discovered I needed "proper" HRT. It took a few months, certainly, before I felt right. Keep talking to your GP - it may just take a couple of tries before you find what is absolutely right for you. Note all the peculiar symptoms and make sure you tell them all to him/her - and make him/her listen, too! I was really lucky with my GP in the UK, and the only time I had HRT problems was when they discontinued Femoston 2/20, which had suited me, and she put me on Premarin - that was terrible! She then used her initiative and gave me the 2 elements of the Femoston as separate prescriptions, and I was back to normal again until the gynaecologist here forced me to stop taking it altogether.
